What’s the age eligibility of Healthy Families?

I heard that age 18 is the limit for healthy families and that if any older we’re not eligible anymore. Is this true? Can we do anything about it or do we have no choice but to change to a different health insurance company? Thanks!

Healthy Families is the Medicaid program in SEVERAL different states, for children and pregnant women.

Some states, it’s until you turn 18, other states, it’s until you turn 19. So it’s going to matter which state you live in.

There’s nothing you can do – when you no longer qualify for child welfare health insurance, you no longer qualify. It’s not about "changing" to a different insurance company – it’s about buying REAL health insurance, instead of receiving welfare health insurance. And real health insurance can be expensive.

Help!

How? If everyone believes their upbringing is "normal" for their family then who is to say what is or is not considered dysfunctional/healthy?

You only qualify for unemployment if you were working at some time during the past 24 months and have some benefits that were paid into the unemployment fund by your employers. Just being unemployed doesn’t qualify you, you have to have worked to obtain the benefits. If you were recently laid off you should immediately apply for unemployment. If you haven’t worked in awhile you may still apply but just know that benefits are determined base on the highest quarterly earnings going back 12 months, so you would have had to be working one year ago, and they choose the quarter (3-month periods Jan-Mar, Apr-Jun, Jul-Sep, Oct-Dec) where you earned the most money to determine how much your weekly benefit would be. You have to qualify for benefits, I want to make that clear.

Food stamps are only given to individuals who meet asset requirements and minimum income requirements – a family of 3 with an income of less than $3090 per month would qualify. If you have any savings accounts that needs to be utilized first, having assets over a specific dollar amount may disqualify you. For example, in one state if you have more than $1500 in assets, you may not qualify. An individual with a monthly income of less than $1816 would qualify. An average family gets benefits of $216 per month and it can be more or less, so there’s not a lot of money there.

is it true healthy families cuts off the insurance for you when you turn 18??? im gonna turn 18 in a week and i need to go to the doctor. will they cut off the insurance?

Healthy Families is California Medi-Cal for children under 18. When you turn 18 you are a legal adult and have to apply for regular Medi-Cal. That doesnt guarantee you will qualify for it. That depends on your household income.

Would HealthNet Healthy Families insurance cover this?

I have had what I think is rosacea now for the last 4 years. My cheeks are always red, and constantly burn. It is almost like a sunburn all the time. I have tried so many different creams and nothing seems to work. I read that laser treatment seems to be effective for reducing the redness and burning sensation. I am 17 and have Healthnet Healthy Families. My question is, would Laser Treatment be covered under insurance? I’m guessing its not, especially under the Healthy Families, but I thought I would give it a shot asking.

Thanks!!

Well, it depends on if it’s cosmetic or not, and it’s WILDLY going to depend on what your real diagnosis is. healthy families WILL cover you getting this issue diagnosed. But maybe not treated, depending on what it actually is.

Learn about the importance of breastfeeding. BC families talk about their breastfeeding challenges, successes and provide advice for families.

Transcript:

[music]

Tara: “Lilly are you all done?…All done? [smiles] All done! Good girl, Lilly’s all done.”

Tara: “Well my breastfeeding experience overall…was..has been great! But of course it’s been like up and down. The first time…well she was a c-section and so I was really worried that I might not…that the milk might not…come right away, or she wouldn’t latch very well. And then I finally got to take her and try to feed her and she latched right away and it was such a relief because that had been something that I had been so worried about, that she wouldn’t latch and …you know…all those things. It was just SUCH a beautiful time. Just sitting there, staring at her for hours and hours and she wasn’t all squirmy and trying to jump around like she is now.”

Tara: “In terms of what I saw as benefits, I just love being close to her and feeling like, it’s so affirming that you can feed your baby all on your own! To earn that trust for your own body as a woman, I think it’s really powerful!
Andrea (Grandmother): “Tara talked about the health benefits of nursing and one thing to tell everyone is — that it’s preventative against breast cancer and ovarian cancer and …um…and it’s just so good for the baby.”

[music]

Natacha: “Well, I plan on breast feeding our first baby just because it seems like it’s the most natural and normal thing to do! And ..um…from what I’ve learned of breast feeding and breast milk — breast milk is the most complete, most perfect that there is out there for little people. So in terms of advice to people, I think there might be some reading that can be done about it, some speaking with people about their experiences that I think could be really interesting…. ”
Chica(Grandmother): “Surround yourself who are proactive, and who have done it, and who have been successful at it. My advice would be don’t lose site that this is the normal way to do it and you’re committed to doing the best for your baby.”

[music]

Taryn: “My generation, I guess there is sort of ..it’s more geared to breast feeding now than maybe it has been in the past? So when I was deciding whether or not to breastfeed, I mean, my friends were all breastfeeding and…it was… basically a no-brainer. So when I first started breastfeeding, it was really tough and the latch was difficult, but over time I just persevered and I just got advice from my mid-wife who would come over and help me with my latch. And the nurses at the hospital were also very helpful. Advice that I’d give to new mom’s is to at least give it a try. And see if it can work for them and it’s a special time for me and him that only me and him can share. It’s been a good experience.”

[music]

Ryan: “What surprised me was that ..uh…she for the first 6 months, she was just only on breastmilk. Nothing else. And it worked REALLY well. I was a little nervous, but then we listened to the doctor and they said, you know, you feed them breastmilk up to 6 months. We wanted to have a healthy baby, so, we were going for the breastfeeding for sure! And…it’s been really good.”

Anitia: [Laughs] “Yes. You liked it , didn’t you?”
