Teaching my son how to operate a Remington 870 Pump Shotgun. Previously I taught him the NRA gun safety protocol and let him get some skills together with a Daisy Red Rider BB gun. Today I showed him how to operate a Browning Buckmark .22 rifle and let him shoot one shot a time with it. I showed him all the parts and how they function. I taught him how to load the magazine. I showed him the difference between subsonic and high velocity .22 cartridges. Then it was time to learn about the shotgun. We started with a single round of bird shot to see if he could control the gun and handle the recoil. I then took a shell apart and showed him the components, the primer, the powder charge, the power piston, the shot, the hull. I ignited the powder charge to demonstrate where the propulsive force comes from. I fired the empty hull to show him what the primer does. Then I showed him how to load the Remington 870 and let him shoot the gun from the hip. He is too small to shoulder the weapon safely. Considering this is his first time operating a pump gun he accomplished the task safely. I approached the lesson from the perspective of home defense. Just keep shooting until the bad guys go away. We then looked at the difference between high brass shells and target rounds and I shot a jug with a slug to show the tremendous energy a slug imparts on impact. I shot some 3/4″ OSB to demonstrate how bird shot, 00 buck and slugs differ in destructive force and penetration and explained why these all have appropriate applications. Throughout the lesson I emphasized proper gun handling, safety, and the potential any gun has to accidentally hurt or kill a person or animal if used improperly. Of course all weapons were returned to the locker and I hope he can use this knowledge in the event I am not there to take care of business.
